Loket Castle, Loket nad Ohří
Category: Castles region: 31-40 km from Františkovy Lázně | Město: Loket
One of the most sought-after historic sites in the Region of Karlovy Vary undoubtedly is the Gothic Loket Castle. The castle was founded in the 13th century as a strategic defence point on the borders of the kingdom. The only Romanesque structures that have been preserved at the castle to this day include the valuable rotunda, the foundations of the castle tower, and the substructures of the north palace. Loket Castle acquired its present-day appearance as a result of an extensive reconstruction completed during the reign of King Wenceslas IV in the 15th century. Rather unfavourable for the castle was its more recent conversion into a prison in the early 19th century.
Loket Castle offers several permanent displays that are open to the public all year round and include, for example:
- Castle prison with an authentic torture display
- Exhibition of bar weapons in the tower
- Porcelain exhibition in the Margrave House
And much more Loket Castle is situated approximately 39 kilometres from Františkovy Lázně.
