Franciscan Monastery in Cheb
Category: Religious Sights region: Up to 10km from Františkovy Lázně | Město: Cheb
The monastery, originally serving as a convent for the Minorites and only later assigned to a more strict Franciscan order, was founded in the town of Cheb in the 13th century. Soon afterwards, however, it was devastated by a fire and underwent its first reconstruction. Over the course of centuries, the monastery was repeatedly rebuilt and it received its current appearance in the 18th century.
While on the grounds of the present-day Franciscan Monastery, you may visit various monasterial buildings, the Church of the Annunciation, the monastery garden and the unique Gothic cross-shaped corridor, which is considered one of the most beautiful historical artefacts in Cheb. Aside from its amazing architectural finesse, you may admire relics of murals dating back to the 15th century. Moreover, the cross-shaped corridor is associated with a rather interesting legend, which claims that the ghosts of 11 friars, who had perished during the fire, may be seen in the corridor early in the morning.
