Church of St. Nicolas in Cheb

Category: Religious Sights region: Up to 10km from Františkovy Lázně  | Město: Cheb

The Catholic parish Church of Saint Nicholas, which is the oldest church structure in Cheb, stands in Kostelní Square in the centre of the town. It was originally built as a Romanesque basilica in the early 13th century but it was destroyed by fire soon afterwards and reconstructed in the spirit of the Gothic Era. Its appearance was also altered by two additional reconstructions in Baroque and Neo-Gothic style. As a result of the most recent renovation efforts carried out in 2008, the church re-acquired its original tall pyramidal towers that had been destroyed during air raids towards the end of World War II.

The most interesting artefacts at the Church of Saint Nicholas include the Romanesque baptistery from the early 13th century, the 9 faces of its medieval builders sculpted into the portal above the main entrance, the colourful window panes, or the rare frescoes on the support columns of the church nave. The opening of one of the newly rebuilt church towers to the public is planned soon.
